Primary muscles

  1. Sit back on an incline bench (set to about 45 degrees), holding a dumbbell in each hand with your arms extended and palms facing each other.
  2. Keeping your upper arms stationary, curl the dumbbells up toward your shoulders.
  3. Slowly lower the dumbbells with control back to the starting position.

Tips

  • Keep your upper arms hanging straight down and still against the bench throughout the curl, using the incline to place your arms behind your torso at the start.
  • Curl the dumbbells with a neutral grip (palms facing each other) all the way through the movement, without rotating your wrists.
  • Lower the dumbbells with control until your arms are fully extended before beginning the next repetition.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging the upper arms forward away from the bench as the weight rises, rather than keeping them stationary.
  • Shortening the range of motion by not fully extending the arms at the bottom, so the stretch at the start of each rep is incomplete.
