  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding dumbbells in front of your thighs with your palms facing your body.
  2. Pull the dumbbells vertically toward your chest, leading with your elbows and keeping the weights close to your torso.
  3. Lower the dumbbells back to the starting position with control, ensuring your arms are fully extended before the next rep.

Tips

  • Lead the movement with your elbows so they rise above your hands throughout the pull, keeping the dumbbells close to your torso as they travel upward.
  • Stop pulling when your elbows reach roughly shoulder height, then lower the dumbbells with control until your arms are fully extended before the next rep.
  • Keep your torso upright and still throughout the set, avoiding any lean or sway to help the movement start from the shoulders and arms.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging the torso backward to help lift the dumbbells, which turns the pull into a momentum-driven movement rather than a controlled shoulder and arm action.
  • Letting the elbows drop below the hands during the pull so the dumbbells swing outward and away from the torso instead of traveling vertically.
  • Raising the elbows well above shoulder height at the top of the movement, which places the shoulder joints in an end-range position that many people find uncomfortable.
