Attach a straight bar to a low cable pulley. Stand facing it and grip the bar with a close, overhand grip (palms facing you).
Leading with your elbows, pull the bar straight up toward your chin, keeping it close to your body.
Slowly lower the bar with control back to the starting position.
Tips
Drive your elbows upward and outward so they rise above the bar throughout the pull, keeping the bar close to your torso as it travels up.
Keep your torso upright and still throughout the movement, letting your arms do the pulling rather than leaning back to assist the lift.
Lower the bar with the same deliberate control you use on the way up, avoiding a sudden drop back to the start position.
Common mistakes
Letting the elbows drop below the bar during the pull so the bar swings away from the body instead of traveling straight up.
Shrugging the shoulders up toward the ears at the top of the movement rather than continuing to lead with the elbows.
Using a grip that is too wide, which causes the elbows to point more forward than upward and changes the bar path away from the body.
