Side delts
  1. Attach a handle to a low cable pulley. Stand sideways to the machine and grab the handle with your outside hand so the cable crosses in front of you.
  2. With a slight bend in your elbow, raise your arm out to your side until it is level with your shoulder.
  3. Slowly lower the handle with control back to the start. Complete all reps on one side before switching.

Tips

  • Keep your elbow slightly bent and maintain that angle throughout the lift so the movement stays at the shoulder rather than the elbow.
  • Lead the raise with your elbow rather than your wrist, so your hand stays roughly level with or slightly below your elbow as your arm travels upward.
  • Lower the handle at a controlled pace on the way down rather than letting it drop, so both phases of the repetition are deliberate.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging the torso to the side or leaning away from the machine to get the handle moving, rather than lifting with the shoulder alone.
  • Raising the arm well above shoulder height by shrugging the shoulder upward at the top of the movement.
