  1. Stand tall holding a dumbbell in each hand in front of your thighs, with your palms facing your body.
  2. Keeping your arms relatively straight, lift one dumbbell straight in front of you until it reaches shoulder height.
  3. Slowly lower the dumbbell with control back to the starting position. Repeat with your other arm.

Tips

  • Keep a slight, fixed bend in your elbow throughout the lift so your arm moves as one unit from shoulder to wrist.
  • Raise the dumbbell at a steady, controlled pace and lower it with the same deliberate control rather than letting it drop.
  • Keep your torso upright and still throughout each repetition, moving only the working arm.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging the torso backward at the start of the lift to help the dumbbell move upward.
  • Raising the dumbbell well above shoulder height, which takes the front delt through its intended range and shifts the movement toward the upper traps.
  • Letting the elbow bend progressively more as the weight rises, effectively curling the dumbbell up rather than raising it.
