  1. Sit in the ab machine and grip the handles. Position your feet securely.
  2. Crunch your upper body forward by contracting your abs.
  3. Slowly return to the starting position with control.

Tips

  • Initiate each rep by curling your torso forward from the upper spine rather than simply pushing the handles down with your arms.
  • Return to the starting position with control rather than letting the weight stack pull you back quickly.
  • Before you begin, adjust the seat height so the machine's pivot point aligns roughly with your midsection, allowing the resistance to match your crunch movement.

Common mistakes

  • Pulling the handles with the arms instead of driving the movement with the torso causes the upper body to remain largely upright throughout the rep.
  • Using momentum to swing the torso forward rather than moving through a controlled range means the crunch motion is incomplete.
