  1. Attach a rope handle to a high cable pulley. Kneel down and grip the rope, pulling it down to either side of your head.
  2. Keeping your hips stationary, crunch your chest toward your knees by contracting your abs.
  3. Slowly return to the starting position, feeling a stretch in your abs.

Tips

  • Keep your hips fixed at the same angle throughout each rep so that the movement comes entirely from rounding your spine, not from hinging at the hips.
  • Hold the rope handles beside your head and keep them there throughout the set so the cable pulls in a consistent direction as you crunch down.
  • Lower yourself back to the start position with control, allowing your abs to lengthen fully before beginning the next rep.

Common mistakes

  • Hinging forward at the hips rather than rounding the spine causes the torso to drop as a single unit instead of curling the chest toward the knees.
  • Pulling the rope handles down and away from the head during the crunch changes the hand path and disrupts the intended movement.
  • Letting the weight stack pull you back up quickly shortens the time your abs are working through the return phase and reduces control of the movement.
