Calves
  1. Sit in the leg press machine. Place the balls of your feet on the lower edge of the footplate, keeping your legs straight but not locked.
  2. Release the safety catches. Lower your heels slowly until you feel a deep stretch in your calves.
  3. Push through the balls of your feet to fully raise your heels as high as possible, squeezing your calves.

Tips

  • Position only the balls of your feet on the lower edge of the footplate so your heels hang freely and can travel through a full range of motion in both directions.
  • At the top of each rep, pause briefly with your heels raised as high as your ankle mobility allows before lowering with control.
  • Keep your knees straight but not forcefully locked throughout the set so the movement stays focused at the ankle joint.

Common mistakes

  • Cutting the descent short and not lowering the heels until a full stretch is felt means the bottom portion of the range of motion is skipped.
  • Bouncing out of the bottom position by dropping the heels quickly and immediately reversing direction removes the controlled lowering phase of the repetition.
