  1. Set the cable to a low position, face away from the machine, and hold the rope or handle behind your head with elbows bent.
  2. Extend your arms straight up toward the ceiling, keeping your elbows close to your ears and your torso stable in a staggered stance.
  3. Slowly lower the weight back to the starting position, feeling a deep stretch in your triceps before the next rep.

Tips

  • Keep your elbows pointing straight up and close to your head throughout the movement, rather than letting them drift outward as you extend.
  • Use a staggered stance and keep your torso upright and still so that the movement comes entirely from your elbow joints.
  • Lower the handle or rope in a controlled manner until you feel a clear stretch in your triceps before beginning the next extension.

Common mistakes

  • Allowing the elbows to flare out to the sides during the extension, which changes the path of the movement away from the intended overhead line.
  • Leaning the torso forward or arching the lower back as the weight is lowered, rather than keeping the upper body stable throughout the set.
  • Cutting the lowering phase short and not allowing the elbows to bend enough to reach a stretched position, resulting in an incomplete range of motion.
