  1. Stand with a barbell across your upper back and your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Step one foot back and lower your hips until your back knee is just above the floor.
  3. Drive through your front foot to raise yourself back to the starting position.

Tips

  • Keep your torso upright as you lower into the lunge so the barbell stays centered over your base of support.
  • Drive through the heel and midfoot of your front foot to return to the starting position, keeping your front knee tracking over your toes throughout.
  • Lower your hips in a controlled manner until your back knee is just above the floor, then reverse the movement without pausing at the bottom.

Common mistakes

  • Stepping back too short a distance causes the front shin to angle sharply forward and the front heel to lift off the floor.
  • Leaning the torso forward from the hips as you descend, rather than keeping it upright, causes the barbell to shift forward of your base of support.
  • Pushing off the back foot instead of the front foot to stand up reduces the demand on the front leg and changes the intended movement pattern.
